Expressing their grief over Akeredolu’s untimely death, IDA emphasized that choosing a deputy from Owo would serve as compensation for the loss of their distinguished son. The group conveyed their concerns that neglecting this request could potentially escalate the polarization of the state along ethnic and political lines.
During a press briefing, IDA’s Chairman, Segun Ogunbadeniyi, along with the Secretary, Femi Fadaisi, and the Publicity Secretary, Julius Adesola, stressed that the community would persist in its appeal until Governor Aiyedatiwa appoints an Owo indigene as deputy.
Ogunbadeniyi, reading the communiqué on behalf of the group, underscored the importance of safeguarding the interests and aspirations of Owo, particularly in the wake of Akeredolu’s passing. The group proposed a joint ticket that expires in February 2025, specifically mentioning Owo/Ilaje, and urged that the deputy governor position should be filled by someone from Owo.
They presented a list of capable Owo indigenes for consideration, including Hon. Niran-Sule Akinsuyi, who was actively involved with Akeredolu during the 2016 elections, the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, Mr. Zach Adetula, and Chief Jamiu Ekungba, emphasizing that such a selection would be fair to all stakeholders given the collaborative efforts of Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa in securing the joint ticket.
