Former Lagos State Governor Tinubu leans towards a more liberal economic stance, in contrast to Buhari, a former military leader, who tends to adopt protectionist measures. While both collaborated in 2013 against former President Goodluck Jonathan, it appears that Tinubu has chosen to diverge on key policy fronts.
During Buhari’s eight-year tenure, Tinubu maintained relative silence on government policies, only speaking out when they directly affected him during elections. Notably, Tinubu openly disagreed with the previous administration on the implementation of the Naira redesigning policy.
Since assuming office, President Tinubu has actively reversed several policies instituted by former President Buhari. The top six policy reversals include removing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), lifting the ban on cryptocurrency, abolishing the foreign exchange ban on 43 items, discontinuing the phase-out of the old Naira, and retracting the 40% auto deduction of gross Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from partially funded agencies.
These policy shifts mark a distinct departure from the protectionist stance of the Buhari administration, showcasing Tinubu’s inclination towards more liberal economic policies.
