Speaking after Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned the lawmakers’ case to January 24, 2024, Ajibade acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. However, he stressed that the party stood firm on constitutional principles governing defection.
“As a party, we are standing on the side of the constitution of the country. It is not about issues of an agreement because by the constitution, we all swore to uphold,” Ajibade asserted. He clarified that the party welcomed the president’s intervention but highlighted the clarity of Section 109 (1g) of the constitution regarding defection.
The senior lawyer noted that the affected lawmakers had not denied their defection, reinforcing the party’s position that, according to constitutional provisions, they were no longer members of the Rivers House of Assembly.
