The Federal Government had declared Monday and Tuesday as work-free days for the Christmas celebration. However, Kiyawa Road, which is typically busy, appeared deserted compared to regular working days.
Several restaurants were either closed or operating at reduced capacity. Khadija, a restaurant owner, explained that during mid-week breaks, such as this, they usually offer half services as many civil servants tend to travel and may not return until the following week.
Malam Musa, a civil servant, shared insights into the challenges faced during mid-week public holidays, noting that the entire week tends to be inactive because many civil servants delay their return until the following week. He expressed concerns about the high transport fare and the difficulty in finding work upon resumption.
“People are suffering, and the government has not taken significant steps to alleviate the challenges people are facing, such as no minimum wage, no wage award, and no palliative measures,” lamented the civil servant.
