Salako voiced deep distress about recent illegal killings of elephants and other wildlife species across the country. He highlighted instances such as the military’s involvement in the killing of two elephants in Kala Balge, Borno State, at the behest of a Local Government Chairman, and the killing of another elephant by a University of Ibadan Professor in Oyo State. Similar disturbing reports were received concerning the killing of two booted eagles that had migrated from Europe and met their demise in Kebbi and Sokoto States.
Efforts are underway to retrieve transmitters attached to these birds and return them to European researchers, according to Salako. He underscored that these brutal killings not only demonstrate a blatant disregard for wildlife preservation but also underscore the pressing need for heightened public awareness and sensitization regarding the protection of Nigeria’s natural heritage.
Dr. Salako further clarified the Ministry’s commitment to environmental conservation and wildlife protection. He condemned actions undermining the fragile balance of the ecosystem, emphasizing Nigeria’s adherence to international conventions, particularly the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Minister assured that sensitization initiatives would be implemented for security personnel in environmentally sensitive areas, focusing on creating awareness about wildlife conservation, advocating non-lethal conflict resolution methods, and promoting sustainable practices to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.
He reiterated the Ministry’s determination to protect and preserve Nigeria’s wildlife and natural ecosystems, collaborating and providing expertise to develop sustainable strategies aligning with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
