Haruna Abdullahi, the Acting Chairman of FCT-IRS, made this disclosure during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. He also shared the service’s ambitious target of generating around N250 billion in 2024.
Earlier reports from Nivo News indicated that the Service had already generated N98.5 billion within the first seven months of 2023, surpassing the N65.7 billion collected during the same period in 2022.
Abdullahi highlighted the significant growth in FCT’s tax revenue collection, which escalated from N46 billion in 2017 to N124 billion in 2022, representing a remarkable 270% increase. He expressed confidence in reaching the N250 billion target with the collaborative efforts of FCTA staff, the National Assembly, and other essential stakeholders.
He stated, “For the year 2024, FCT-IRS has a target of N250 billion (Two-hundred and Fifty Billion Naira), we are determined and optimistic that we will realize and surpass that, with the committed and dedicated staff of the service, support from the FCT Administration, the National Assembly, and other key stakeholders, including our esteemed taxpayers, it is achievable, and the task ahead is surmountable.”
Abdullahi emphasized the growth of the taxpayer base in the FCT, which expanded from 543,969 individuals and 284,746 non-individuals in 2015 to 1,108,162 individuals and 389,981 non-individuals in 2023.
He also outlined plans for the enforcement of tax compliance, including the verification of Tax Compliance Certificates as a precondition for services in the FCT. Additionally, the FCT-IRS will implement penalties for non-filing of annual returns and intensify reassessment activities to ensure tax compliance. Abdullahi warned of potential legal actions against tax offenders and affirmed the commitment to recovering all taxes owed to the FCT.
