Nigerians React As Supreme Court-Delays Judgment In LP And PDP Appeals Against Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Victory
Following the adoption of their briefs by counsel in the matter, the apex court decided to adjourn the case for judgment. Expressing dissatisfaction with the election outcome, the LP and PDP candidates challenged Sanwo-Olu’s victory at the tribunal, but their petitions were dismissed for lacking merit.
Appealing the tribunal’s decision at the Court of Appeal, Adediran submitted 34 grounds of appeal, while Rhodes-Vivour filed 21. However, these appeals were also dismissed. The two candidates then approached the Supreme Court to set aside the order.
During the proceedings on Tuesday, Mr. Olagbade Benson, counsel for the LP, urged the court to grant the reliefs sought in the appeal and set aside the decisions of the lower courts. He specifically called on the court to determine whether the deputy candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, a USA citizen, was qualified to contest in Lagos.
In response, Nas Ogunsakin, counsel for the first respondent, urged the court to dismiss the appeal, asserting the lack of evidence supporting the claims. Wole Olanipekun SAN, representing the second and third respondents, accused the appellant of filing a different case at the Supreme Court and urged the dismissal of the appeal.
Muiz Banire, counsel for the fourth respondent, called for the dismissal of the appeal with substantial costs, stating that it was at variance with what was pleaded at the tribunal.
The Supreme Court, led by John Okoro, reserved judgment on the matter.
Regarding the PDP appeal, Clement Onwuenwunor, SAN, counsel for the appellant, argued that the name Sanwo-Olu submitted to INEC differed from that on his WAEC certificate. He urged the court to hear the appeal.
Ogunsakin, representing INEC, claimed the appeal challenged the concurrent findings of the lower courts and requested the court to dismiss it. Olanipekun, representing the second and third respondents, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction and accused the appellant of seeking a review of evidence.
Banire, citing Sections 29 and 82 of the Electoral Act, described the matter as status-barred and urged the court to dismiss it. Counsel for the fifth and sixth respondents, Olagbade Benson and Benson Idowu, also called for the dismissal of the appeal.

-
Advocacy for Amnesty: He questioned why IPOB members cannot renounce violence and seek government amnesty and rehabilitation, similar to the programs offered to repentant terrorists and bandits in northern Nigeria.
-
Context of Allegations: Uwazuruike’s comments appear to be prompted by recent social media videos featuring hooded, armed militants who claim loyalty to Kanu and threaten further violence in the South East to secure his release.

-
The Incident: Approximately an hour after the meeting, Risku and an associate were intercepted and fatally shot in Okudu village.
