An undisclosed senior civil servant in Jalingo recounted that he had to purchase beer amounting to over N200,000 to gain permission for harvesting his Benniseed farm. The bandits reportedly impose levies ranging from N20,000 to N100,000 based on the farm’s size.
“I had to pay with beer worth N200,000 to secure access to my farm,” he disclosed.
The farming communities affected by this unusual levy system include Baka, Kasakuru, Majowere, Digun, Nyapori, Buzi, Dare, and Sakala, according to the report. A local resident, Mallam Dantala Bello, noted that farmers have grown accustomed to paying these levies to the bandits before every harvest.
“Some farmers abandon their farms if the levies are excessive, fearing they won’t recover the amount invested after the harvest,” he remarked.
Another source in the area indicated that the bandits collaborate with informants to gather information on individuals intending to harvest their crops in the region.
