The FCT High Court in Abuja has issued an injunction preventing former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Pauline Tallen, from holding public office in Nigeria. In reaction to the judgment, Tallen had expressed her belief that the ruling reflected the marginalization of women in Nigerian politics. The President of the NBA, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), demanded an apology from Tallen for her remarks and, when she failed to apologize, threatened legal action.

In its ruling on December 18, the High Court deemed Tallen’s comments as “unconstitutional, careless, reckless, and disparaging.” The court condemned her call to disobey the judgment of the Federal High Court in Adamawa State, considering it “contemptuous of the Federal High Court of Nigeria.”

As a consequence, the court provided Tallen with an opportunity to avoid the repercussions of her statements by issuing a public apology in two national newspapers within 30 days. The injunction restraining her from holding any public office in Nigeria will become perpetual if she fails to comply with this order.
