Federal Government Seeks Solutions To Lecturers’ Abuse Of Overseas Sponsorship-Disturbing Trend

Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, revealed this during a press briefing at the TETFund management retreat in Makurdi, Benue State.
Echono emphasized that TETFund would take decisive measures, either compelling the lecturers to reimburse the funds expended on their education or arranging for their repatriation.
“I hesitate to provide specific figures because the situation is distressing. It is disheartening to witness the abuse of this valuable opportunity,” Echono commented.
Elaborating further, he stated, “The figures are comprehensive, which is why they appear substantial. Some individuals returned home without fulfilling the minimum bond years before opting to relocate or joining what is referred to as the ‘Japa syndrome.’ We are continually refining our database based on reports submitted by the institutions. While obtaining precise figures can be challenging, some individuals either exceeded their course period or obtained extensions. Despite these complexities, the number is discouraging, and I can confirm that even security agencies are becoming involved and closely monitoring the situation.”
