BREAKING: Oyo State Government Faces Financial Restriction As Court Orders Freeze On Bank Accounts
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has issued an order to freeze the accounts of the Oyo State Government across ten commercial banks in Nigeria. This directive came as a result of a garnishee proceeding initiated by former council leaders in Oyo State who were removed from their positions by Governor Seyi Makinde on May 29, 2019….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In 2021, the ousted local government chairmen and councillors secured a judgment of N4,874,889,425.60 against Governor Makinde and other state officials/agencies. These officials and agencies, including the Attorney-General, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Accountant-General of Oyo State, Speaker of the House of Assembly, the House of Assembly, and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), were listed as judgment debtors based on a May 7, 2021, Supreme Court decision.
The garnishee proceeding, led by Bashorun Majeed Ajuwon and other ex-council leaders, aimed to recover the outstanding balance of N3,424,889,425.60 (N3.5 billion) from the actual judgment sum. Governor Makinde had paid only N1.5 billion in 2022, leaving the balance unrecovered.
The outstanding amount, as per the Supreme Court judgment, was N3,374,889,425.60. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja added N50 million as a cost against Makinde and others in a December 8 judgment that dismissed their appeal.
The accounts of the Oyo State Government were frozen in ten banks, including Zenith Bank, United Bank of Africa (UBA), Wema Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, Ecobank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, Polaris Bank, Jaiz Bank, and Union Bank.
Justice A. O. Ebong issued the ruling on December 15, with the certified true copy released on Monday. He instructed the banks to file affidavits and appear in court on the next adjourned date to show cause why the garnishee orders should not be made absolute. The judge also imposed a cost of N300,000 against the judgment debtors and scheduled the next hearing for January 5, 2024.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
