Expressing her concern about the inadequacy of genuine commitment to addressing crucial issues, the minister highlighted the problem of allocating more attention to less important matters. She cited instances where significant amounts, such as $10 million, were expended on meetings, advocacy, and travel without yielding tangible benefits for Nigerian women.
She remarked, “They tell you that the intention is to get money, but no money is obtained, yet expenses are incurred to attend these events. I informed them that I would not be attending. What purpose does my presence serve there?”
Rep. Kafilat Ogbara, the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs, emphasized that this year’s conference focused on women’s empowerment and the creation of sustainable policy documents. Additionally, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, assured Nigerian women of the House’s commitment to passing the Gender Equal Opportunity Bill.
