Nigerians React As Government Reveals Strategy To Put An End To Vehicle Smuggling
The Nigerian government has announced a strategy to combat vehicle smuggling into the country through the implementation of the National Vehicle Registry Policy, known as VREG….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

VREG consolidates vehicle data from various agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service, Vehicles Inspection Offices, the Police, National Central Vehicles Data, and the Federal Road Safety Corps’ database.
During the VREG Zonal Sensitisation Campaign in Abuja, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized that this initiative aims to address customs duty evasion by vehicle importers.
Edun stated, “The Federal Ministry of Finance is tasked with managing the nation’s finances and revenue streams. Faced with declining revenue due to falling oil prices and a mono-economy, worsened by revenue leakages such as customs duty payment evasion, the government found it necessary to provide effective responses to these issues.”
He further highlighted the absence of a centralized platform for national vehicular information in Nigeria, despite being the largest vehicle importer in Africa. The VREG, introduced in 2021, addresses challenges such as customs duty evasion, data paucity for vehicular policy formulation, nationwide vehicle administration for revenue leakages, vehicle theft, vehicle-related crimes, road traffic regulation enforcement, limited access to credit facilities, and ineffective vehicle insurance coverage and monitoring.
Edun emphasized the positive impact of VREG, stating, “Since the emergence of VREG in 2021, several benefits of the registry have been achieved, including its use as a tool to mitigate the evasion of customs duty administration. Currently, VREG seamlessly integrates with critical stakeholders, facilitating real-time, dynamic information exchange.”
