Minister of Works David Umahi has revealed the establishment of six regional committees tasked with reviewing the outstanding debts of road contractors, totaling N1.5 trillion. This announcement was conveyed through a statement signed by the minister’s Chief Press Secretary, Uchenna Orji, in Abuja on Sunday. Umahi disclosed this information during an internal budget defense session with ministry directors, as they prepared for their presentation to the joint committees of the National Assembly scheduled for Monday.
Highlighting the critical importance of road infrastructure development for Nigeria’s economic growth, Umahi emphasized that it plays a pivotal role in enhancing security, agriculture, trade, investment, as well as health and education. Acknowledging the need for a different approach beyond the 2024 budget envelope, the minister expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his attention to the ministry and approval of concrete pavement in numerous 2024 projects.
Umahi stated, “The ministry is committed to the development of road infrastructure in line with the Renewed Hope agenda. The substantial debts stemming from unpaid certificates inherited from the past administration, amounting to N1.5 trillion up to the present, and the anticipated contract reviews due to inflation, are recognized by the ministry as challenges that must be addressed to facilitate progress.”
To tackle these issues, Umahi established six committees, each dedicated to a specific geopolitical zone, with the mandate to comprehensively review all outstanding debts associated with unpaid certified certificates generated before May 29, 2023, and from May 29, 2023, onward.
