Breaking: NPC Chairman Stresses Information Gap Due To Census Absence (Details)
The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, highlighted on Saturday that the absence of a census has resulted in an information gap in the country. Emphasizing the need for Nigeria to promptly conduct its census after a 17-year lapse, Isa-Kwarra, speaking at a retreat for the Chairman and members of the House Committee on Population of the House of Representatives, stressed that Nigeria’s lack of data hampers sustainable national development….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Represented by Malam Muhammad Dattijo Usman, the Federal Commissioner in charge of Niger State, Isa-Kwarra stated, “Population is a critical factor in a nation’s efforts towards achieving sustainable development. The people are both the agents and beneficiaries of the development process. Knowledge of the country’s population in terms of size, distribution, and socio-economic characteristics is required for planning purposes.”
He underscored the importance of conducting regular censuses, ideally every 10 years, as recommended by the United Nations, particularly given Nigeria’s rapid population growth rate of 3.2% and an estimated population of about 216 million. Isa-Kwarra expressed concerns about the information void resulting from the country’s failure to conduct a population census in the last 17 years, rendering the data from the 2006 Census less useful for planning.
Highlighting the advanced preparations for the next census, including the demarcation of all Local Government Areas (LGAs) into enumeration areas since 2015, Isa-Kwarra emphasized that further delays in conducting the census could diminish the optimal quality of its outcomes due to the evolving environmental landscape and settlement patterns in the country.
