Former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Bashorun J.K. Randle, has voiced criticism against the Federal Government’s neglect of the education sector in the country, stating that it deserves a higher budget allocation than it currently receives. Speaking as a Special Guest at the Government Secondary School, Owerri (GSSO), Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch, 2023 End of Year Banquet Award Night and Fundraiser, Bashorun J.K. Randle lamented the significant decline in education in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for urgent action to recover lost ground. He criticized the government for not doing enough to provide quality education to Nigerians, pointing out that much-needed funds are being diverted to other areas.
Randle highlighted the sorry state of schools, with facilities deteriorating, buildings left incomplete, and widespread insecurity affecting students’ attendance. He linked the rise in insecurity to people losing hope in the country due to perceived impoverishment from poor governance. Randle urged the government to refocus its priorities, emphasizing the critical role of education in creating responsible citizens and reducing insecurity.
In addition, Randle stressed the importance of giving students practical skills to make them self-employed and contributors to the nation’s economy. He called for a shift in government focus, advocating for investment in education and skill development rather than excessive spending on security.
Commending the Lagos Chapter of GSSO Old Boys Association for their support to their alma mater, Randle encouraged them to continue their efforts for the growth of education in the country. He concluded by emphasizing the need for government to fulfill its basic obligations in education.
At the same event, development consultant Dr. Ndi Emma Onuekwusi attributed the present economic hardship in Nigeria to bad leadership. Expressing regret over the decline in the education sector, which was once a source of pride attracting foreign teachers and lecturers in the 60s, Dr. Onuekwusi called for the current government to address Nigeria’s challenges without favoritism. Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism that Nigeria would bounce back to greatness.
