The African Group of Negotiators, present at the ongoing 28th Conference of Parties, conveyed their disappointment regarding the discussions on adaptation, which they deem crucial for Africa. Nzuvo emphasized the gravity of the issue for Africa, describing it as a matter of life and death. He communicated the group’s discontent with the slow progress in adaptation talks during the initial conference week, emphasizing the need for a robust framework on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). Proposed by the African Group of Negotiators in 2013 and established in 2015 under the Paris Agreement, the GGA aims to enhance adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience, and reduce vulnerability to climate change globally.

Despite the urgency of adaptation needs, finance for adaptation lags behind mitigation funds. Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Goal on Adaptation, highlighted that the required climate adaptation funding for the global south is approximately $400 million annually. While expressing cautious optimism about the ongoing conference’s potential, Nzuvo stated that the GGA’s outcome is pivotal for Africa’s success at COP28.

The United Nations Environmental Programme’s latest adaptation gap report indicates a significant shortfall in adaptation finance for developing countries, estimating the current gap at $194 – 366 billion per year. This growing gap has implications for losses and damages, particularly affecting the most vulnerable populations. Nzuvo criticized developed countries for their failure to provide adequate multilateral support to Africa, a region that contributes minimally to the climate crisis but experiences severe consequences.

Nzuvo also raised concerns about the Loss and Damage fund, commending its historic adoption but remaining cautious due to past unfulfilled commitments. He emphasized the necessity for African countries to access increased levels of new and additional grant and concessional finance for climate action. The story was produced as part of the 2023 Climate Change Media Partnership, a journalism fellowship organized by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security.

“South Has Had More Time In Power” — Atiku Speaks On Zoning Debate

Published

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has argued that the North is not disadvantaged in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement under democratic rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku made the statement during an interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on zoning, fairness, and political balance in the country.

He noted that since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, the South has held the presidency for about 18 years, while the North has governed for roughly 10 years.

According to him, this should be taken into account when discussing which region has benefited more from the country’s power rotation system. He also maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only major political party with zoning clearly embedded in its constitution.

“The South has governed for 18 years and the North for 10. So who is really in deficit if we are being fair? Even more broadly, the only party with zoning formally entrenched is the PDP,” he said.

Atiku also recalled the constitutional conference held during the military era under General Sani Abacha, where he led a group that opposed the inclusion of rotational presidency in the constitution.

He said the proposal, championed by the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, was rejected at the time because his group had majority support among delegates.

According to him, Ekwueme later acknowledged that the decision may not have been ideal during his funeral years later. Atiku added that he now believes a rotational system, if adopted earlier, could have ensured a more balanced distribution of power across Nigeria’s regions.

Atiku also recalled his role in the early formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he was among its key founders and also contributed financially to its establishment.

He further noted that during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a panel was set up to investigate his activities. He said the panel included figures such as Nasir El-Rufai and Nuhu Ribadu, and that he allowed the process to proceed without relying on his immunity.

“I made my money through business before joining politics. I invested in oil and gas, logistics, agriculture and other sectors,” he said.

ADC Cracks Down: Oyegun, Osunbor, Others Suspended Over Alleged Anti-Party Moves.

Published

on

A fresh leadership crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, as a faction of the party announced the suspension of two former governors, two ex-senators and several other members over alleged misconduct.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision was announced on April 15, 2026, after a meeting of the faction’s State Executive Committee.

Among those suspended are former governors John Odigie-Oyegun and Osareimen Osunbor, as well as former senators Yisa Braimoh and Ehigie Uzamere.

Others affected include Nosa Ehima, former Oredo Local Government chairman; Sylvester Ewanehi, a former state commissioner; Tony Alile, the party’s newly elected Edo chairman; Jafaru Sumaila; Stella Alli; Igieogbe Asemota; and Christopher Ojeikere, the state publicity secretary.

Factional state chairman Kennedy Odion said the suspension followed allegations of insubordination, anti-party conduct and failure to comply with party directives.

He also accused the affected members of setting up parallel structures within the party and engaging in actions capable of causing division and confusion.

According to Odion, the State Executive Committee further found that some of the suspended members were involved in groups not recognised by the party’s constitution.

As part of the disciplinary action, all affected members have been barred from attending meetings, participating in party activities, making decisions on behalf of the ADC, or presenting themselves as party representatives.

The directive also instructed all party organs across Edo State to deny the suspended members recognition and access throughout the suspension period. Local government and ward executives were directed to ensure full compliance and report any breaches.

Odion said each affected member would receive a formal notice detailing the allegations and would be invited to appear before the State Disciplinary Committee to defend themselves, call witnesses and seek representation if necessary.

He added that the disciplinary process would follow the party’s constitutional procedures, while those suspended have the right to appeal within 14 days. Any appeal, he said, would be reviewed and decided within 21 days.

The faction said the suspension takes immediate effect and is binding on all party structures in the state.
