The family of Ebonyi State University undergraduate Ebube Akah is seeking justice after he and a commercial motorcyclist were killed by a convoy allegedly associated with Governor Francis Nwifuru. According to Mr. Akah, the governor was not present during the accident, which involved a car from the governor’s convoy. The police commissioner in Ebonyi State, Augustina Ogbodo, met with the Akah family but, as of now, no action has been taken regarding the incident. Mr. Akah accused the police of aligning with the government’s interests.
Police spokesperson Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the incident but did not respond to specific allegations. She mentioned that the family is in contact with the Commissioner of Police. Governor Nwifuru and his media aide, Monday Uzor, did not respond to inquiries.
The accident occurred when Ebube, on a motorcycle, was hit by a car in Governor Nwifuru’s convoy. Both Ebube and the motorcyclist died instantly. The family accused the convoy drivers of recklessness, leading to the tragic incident. Passers-by reportedly attempted to confront one of the drivers but were stopped by the police.
The police registered Ebube’s corpse as “unknown” at the morgue, despite possessing his ATM cards. The family alleged a cover-up, stating that the police removed the SIM cards from Ebube’s phone. The family discovered Ebube’s body in the morgue two days after the accident, leading to increased anguish.
The family, mourning Ebube’s death, highlighted the impact on their widowed mother’s health, exacerbated by their father’s passing in 2021. While Ebube’s remains are in the morgue, the deceased motorcyclist has been interred according to Islamic rites in Abakaliki.
