Lawyers have expressed concern over continuous threats to the life of Barrister Yetunde Olubunmi Shaibu, Convener of the United Front for Democracy (UFD). The lawyers revealed their apprehensions during an emergency press conference in Abuja. They claim that the threats stem from UFD’s exposure of an alleged covert attempt by the Social Democratic Party and its governorship candidate to file a petition against the November 11 election outcome clandestinely. This move, they assert, was an effort to circumvent the provisions of the Electoral Act, having failed to do so within the legally prescribed 21-day window.

The lawyers emphasized their skepticism about the Secretary of the Tribunal’s claim of being attacked and having petitions stolen shortly after UFD’s whistleblowing. Since Monday, when Shaibu raised the alarm, she has reportedly received numerous threats, and her family members have faced harassment.

Calling for intervention, the lawyers urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security chiefs, and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of their colleague, emphasizing that “an injury to one is an injury to all of us.”

Barrister Ambrose Ajoyo Omoleaupen, the Convener of CDD, spoke on behalf of the lawyers, emphasizing the need to thoroughly investigate any threats to Shaibu’s life. They questioned the suspicious circumstances surrounding the Secretary of the Tribunal’s alleged attack and theft of documents.

The lawyers called for a closer examination of the issues surrounding the filing of petitions by concerned political parties in Kogi State. They raised questions about the handling of election petition documents, the lack of evidence from the Social Democratic Party to support their filing, and the silence of other political parties allegedly involved in petition filing.

Challenging the credibility of the incident, the lawyers posed key questions regarding the filing process, the location of filing, and the authenticity of the claims made by the involved parties. They called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and uphold the principles of justice and democracy.

An Immigration officer, Aridegbe Akim, who testified as the first prosecution witness, told the court that passport number A07535463 allegedly issued to one Tali Shani could not be traced in the agency’s database.

Dare made the remarks in a statement posted on his handle on Thursday, where he said Atiku’s 2027 presidential ambition is “dead on arrival.”

He argued that the interview did not project leadership or policy direction, but instead revealed contradictions and what he called a lack of substance on key national issues.

According to him, Atiku failed to present a clear alternative to the ongoing economic reforms, offering what he described as criticism without a workable roadmap.

Dare also said the former Vice President’s comments alienated several political and social groups, insisting that the interview reflected grievance rather than unity or leadership.

He maintained that Nigeria is currently undergoing necessary reforms, adding that citizens are already seeing progress rather than political promises.

The presidential aide concluded that Atiku is steadily losing political relevance, saying the interview only reinforced doubts about his leadership capacity.
