Breaking: ECOWAS Court Denies Niger Military Junta’s Request To Lift Regional Sanctions
The ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja dismissed a request to lift sanctions imposed on Niger Republic by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government following a coup in the country….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While the court acknowledged its jurisdiction to hear the case, it ruled against granting the request for interim measures sought by the Nigerien junta.
The court’s president, Edward Asante, stated that the junta did not meet additional requirements for the case to be admissible. The sanctions, which included cutting off electricity supply to Niger, were imposed in an attempt to restore constitutional order after the coup.
The Nigerien military regime, seeking relief from the sanctions, approached the ECOWAS court, requesting interim measures to halt the penalties. The junta argued that the sanctions had adverse effects on the country, leading to shortages of food, medicine, and electricity.
However, the court rejected the junta’s request, stating that the military government lacked the competence to appear before it.
The court deemed the substantive application inadmissible, as the coup had deprived the junta of the right to institute a suit before a constitutional body like the ECOWAS Court. The court concluded that the request for interim measures could not be granted and dismissed it.
