He expressed concern about the added difficulties faced by individuals with disabilities in a nation grappling with governance challenges and urged the government to prioritize their well-being.
Referring to World Health Organization statistics indicating that more than 35 million Nigerians have disabilities, Obi underscored the importance of government care to enable them to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to national development. He called on the government to ensure access to healthcare and education for this demographic, emphasizing the critical role these services play in both personal development and national progress.
Former Anambra governor, Obi, also called on citizens to dismantle discrimination barriers against those with disabilities, emphasizing the unique abilities that each individual possesses. He reminded the public of legislative provisions mandating public agencies to allocate at least 5 percent of jobs to persons with disabilities, aiming to ensure their adequate representation in both governance and the public sector. He concluded by affirming his commitment to an inclusive vision of nation-building, stating, “Every Nigerian has the potential to contribute to nation-building, and we will leave nobody behind in our journey to a New Nigeria.”
