Afegbua made his aspirations public at the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat. He cited infrastructural decay and leadership deficiencies in the state as the primary motivations behind his decision to run for office.
Contesting under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner, Afegbua pledged to revitalize Edo, aligning its progress with national development objectives and capitalizing on emerging opportunities for growth. He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing education and healthcare, aiming to rejuvenate sectors he believes have suffered neglect.
Advocating for a new era of purposeful leadership, Afegbua expressed his determination to reshape the state’s political landscape, highlighting the resourcefulness and resilience of the Edo people despite prevailing challenges.
Addressing the debate on zoning the governorship ticket to Edo Central, Afegbua dismissed the idea of a zoning arrangement, emphasizing the historical absence of such arrangements in past elections. He encouraged aspirants from all zones to participate without restrictions.
He stated, “There has never been a zoning arrangement for the governorship position in the state. Any assertion of zoning would be misguided. In 2007 when Oshiomhole contested, Edo Central had three ministers, yet Osunbor, also from the central, was elected governor. Since then, every primary conducted by political parties has featured aspirants from all zones. Therefore, this time, nothing should hinder any worthy son of Edo from aspiring to govern the state.”
