Notable transboundary animal diseases prevalent in Nigeria, including Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), African Swine Fever (ASF), and Animal Trypanosomosis and Tick-Borne Diseases, are being addressed through this vaccination initiative.
Exactly one year ago, in December 2022, the federal government reported an annual loss of N29 billion to transboundary animal diseases in Nigeria. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, emphasizing the significance of livestock in Adamawa’s economy, launched the vaccination drive at Girei Cattle Market, highlighting its pivotal role in ensuring public health.
Governor Fintiri’s Chief of Staff, Dr Edgar Amos Sunday, represented him at the event, stressing the necessity of vaccination in curbing the impact of these diseases on animals and subsequently enhancing public health. The governor affirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the livestock subsector, given its substantial contribution to Adamawa’s gross domestic product.
During the vaccination kick-off, the state Commissioner of Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Tijjani Maksha, specified that the campaign primarily focuses on Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia and Peste des Petits Ruminants.
Local leaders, including the Executive Chairman of Girei Local Government Council, Mr Juda Amisa, and the District Head of Girei, Ahmed Ibrahim Mustafa, expressed support for the vaccination exercise, recognizing its crucial role in maintaining public health, economic growth, and overall development.
