Breaking: Intimidation Of Opposition Parties In Nigeria Sparks Worries As Nigeria Edges Towards One-Party State (Details)

The PDP attributes this shift to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while the Labour Party (LP) contends that vital democratic institutions have been entirely compromised by the executive.
Following its loss of ruling status in 2015, the PDP now serves as the primary opposition party. However, challenges, including mass dismissals of party members, have hindered its ability to assume a robust opposition role. The judiciary’s role in these dynamics has also come under scrutiny, with both the PDP and the LP expressing concerns about compromised court decisions.
Dr. Aliyu Danko, the national publicity secretary of the Labour Party, criticizes the judiciary’s decisions, stating that they have not benefited Nigeria and have muddled the electoral process. He highlights concerns about institutions like the Nigeria Police and INEC being influenced by the executive, contributing to the decay in the system.
Meanwhile, Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, emphasizes the threat to democracy posed by compromised electoral systems, particularly citing INEC’s lack of integrity. Both parties stress the importance of addressing institutional challenges to preserve democracy and the rule of law.
