Just In: Tension Escalates As APC And APGA Clash Over Federal Government’s Palliative Rice In Anambra (Details)

According to the forum, Governor Soludo allegedly repackaged the rice into smaller bags and distributed them selectively to members of his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), portraying it as an act of political maneuvering for his re-election campaign.
In a jointly signed statement by its National Convener, Paschal Candle, and the State Coordinator, Chibuzo Michael, the forum claimed that the Federal Government had provided five trucks of 50kg bags of rice palliatives and N5 billion to the state. However, Soludo purportedly re-bagged the rice into 10kg bags, branding them with images of himself and APGA, and commenced distribution exclusively to APGA supporters.
The forum expressed strong disapproval of Soludo’s actions, labeling them as uncharitable, fraudulent, and akin to stealing federal palliatives for political gain. It criticized the lack of transparency in the distribution process, raising concerns about the absence of measures to ensure impartiality in reaching the most vulnerable individuals in the state.
The forum further highlighted instances where the rice palliatives were seemingly used for partisan celebrations, including the birthday festivities of Chief Arthur Eze. The distribution of Soludo-branded rice during this event was deemed unacceptable by the APC group, which questioned the delayed commencement of the palliative distribution and the decision to distribute only 10kg bags of rice.
In response to the allegations, Chief Tony Olisa-Mbeki, the Special Adviser to the APGA National Chairman on Media and Publicity, dismissed the APC’s claims as baseless and unfounded. He asserted that the accusations lacked credibility, with the individuals making them having no political office or representation from a reputable organization. Olisa-Mbeki insisted that Governor Soludo did not distribute palliatives exclusively to APGA supporters but rather for the benefit of all Anambra residents, regardless of their party affiliation.

Addressing the theme “Faith in Action: Empowering the Catholic Laity for Active Political Participation Ahead of the 2027 General Elections,” Fayemi emphasized that Christians have a fundamental duty to infuse public life with their values to advance justice, accountability, and the common good. He stressed that civic involvement must extend far beyond simply casting a ballot, encompassing active steps like running for office, joining political parties, keeping a close eye on electoral procedures, educating fellow voters, and holding leaders strictly accountable.
Urging the laity to reject the notion that governance should be left in the hands of the godless, Fayemi noted that when committed believers turn away, unprincipled opportunists take the reins. He further advised voters to look past ethnic biases, religious divisions, financial inducements, and blind party loyalty as they approach the 2027 elections, focusing instead on candidates whose platforms champion human dignity, peace, security, development, and overall societal welfare.
To turn this vision into reality, Fayemi encouraged eligible Catholics to secure their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), join voter education drives, monitor elections, and help strengthen democratic institutions. Concluding his address, he stressed that the Catholic Church must prioritize political formation, pointing out that encouraging members to participate without proper preparation for public service is not enough.

Speaking on Sunday through a statement, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba—the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division/Sector 2 under Operation FANSAN YAMMA—categorically dismissed the reports tying the incident to Yari’s property as entirely false and misleading.
According to military intelligence, the victims were seized while in transit along the Sububu forest axis toward Talata Mafara rather than at the former governor’s residence. Security forces, alongside allied agencies and local intelligence teams, have ramped up tactical operations in the region to track down and rescue the victims.
In light of the incident, the Army has cautioned citizens against spreading unverified or sensational details that might trigger widespread panic or hinder ongoing security efforts. Osoba urged the public to completely ignore distorted narratives that could jeopardize tactical missions or cause undue alarm.

In the originating motion filed on September 9 by his counsel, Anderson Asemota, Arabambi—represented alongside the Vice Chancellor as respondents—stated that his formal request for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of Obi’s 1984 Bachelor of Arts degree certificate in Philosophy (certificate number D000198) was ignored. He noted that the application, submitted under the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act, 2011 on August 6 following an initial letter, was neither granted nor formally declined with a written notice of refusal within the statutory timeframe prescribed by the law. Consequently, the suit seeks an order of mandamus to compel the university to fulfill its statutory duty by responding to his July 16 request.
