According to these data sources, one in three Nigerian women has experienced physical violence by the age of 15, and 68% have encountered emotional, economic, or sexual abuse.
Obi emphasized that the most effective way to eliminate violence against women is by providing them unimpeded access to quality education, empowering them to assume their rightful roles in society, and ensuring access to good healthcare.
In his words, “Violence against women can be eliminated by empowering Nigerian women to take their rightful place in society and contribute to our collective development as a nation. This, we can do by giving them access to education and healthcare, which are most critical to national development.”
Acknowledging the significant political influence of women in Nigeria, Obi noted that they are vital players in politics, contributing significantly to the voting numbers. However, he highlighted the hindrance caused by violence, emphasizing the need to adhere to the rules of law in the political arena.
In conclusion, Obi asserted that to realize the vision of a better Nigeria, free from violence against women, collaborative efforts are required. He emphasized that development is not gender-based, calling for unity among men and women to propel the nation forward.
