Simultaneously, the NUJ reported a decrease in extortion by policemen on Abia roads, commending the Police authorities and urging them to maintain this positive trend.

In a 12-point communique released after its monthly Congress held at the NUJ Press Centre in Umuahia, the Abia NUJ Council voiced concern about the extortion occurring at military checkpoints across various roads in the state. The communique noted that commuters were being compelled to disembark from vehicles and walk for considerable distances when crossing military checkpoints.

Signed by Comrade Victor Ndukwe (Chairman) and Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe (Secretary), the communique called for the prompt removal of sandbags and other obstacles at roadblocks that had long been abandoned by security agents across the state. It specifically highlighted the Ehimiri Housing Estate in Umuahia, emphasizing the serious risks these abandoned barriers pose to road users.

The Congress applauded the Abia State Government for its initiatives to enhance security at the regional cattle market in Umuchieze, noting a significant reduction in insecurity around the area. The NUJ expressed support for the planned fencing and conversion of the market into a non-residential market.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Abia State Government and security agencies in combating insecurity, the NUJ expressed apprehension about the increasing incidents of robbery and burglary, particularly within the Umuahia metropolis. The journalists urged security agencies to be proactive ahead of the Yuletide season.

Addressing the rising inflation and high cost of living in the country, the NUJ called on the Federal Government to swiftly address the surge in commodity prices and invest the proceeds from fuel subsidy removal in critical sectors that could positively impact lives.

Major Highlights Of Tinubu’s Meeting With State Governors

Commending the Abia State Government for ongoing road expansion and rehabilitation projects, the NUJ praised Governor Alex Otti for compensating owners of demolished properties on the Ossah six-lane road. The NUJ advised that these projects be completed promptly to address the state’s infrastructural deficit.

Regarding the proliferation of water boreholes in parts of Abia, the NUJ appealed to the State Government to revive the state’s Water Board.

Finally, the NUJ cautioned politicians, both in government and in the opposition, against making inflammatory statements and advised against language that could escalate tensions in the polity.
