In the midst of the ongoing political turmoil in Ondo State, stemming from the prolonged discord between Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, Aiyedatiwa, Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti and a group of elders in Ondo State have urgently urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the situation.
During an emergency meeting in Akure, the state capital, Fasoranti, alongside other elder statesmen operating under the banner of Ondo State Elders and Leaders, expressed concern that the political crisis, particularly the governor’s absence, has been adversely impacting governance in the state.
In a communiqué signed by Afenifere’s leader and the group’s secretary, Bakitta Bello, the elders emphasized that certain individuals have taken control of the state’s governance. They asserted that failure to promptly address this situation would inevitably hamper the formulation of the 2024 budget.
The elders, lamenting the state’s absence from crucial national events due to the crisis, also highlighted the lack of clear direction within the state’s civil service.
The communiqué stated: “The Elders also call on the state and national leadership of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, to provide the required guidance to those in government as well as ensure discipline amongst their fold.
“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is hereby passionately called upon to intervene and end the present constitutional crisis in the state, to avoid the looming breakdown of law and order in Ondo State.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated a thorough restructuring of Nigerian football, citing ongoing struggles and failure to qualify for major international tournaments. To execute this overhaul, Tinubu instructed NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko to collaborate with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) secretariat on a wide-ranging consultative process, while stressing the necessity of coordinating with FIFA and CAF to avert any penalties related to government interference. This presidential directive closely follows the resignations of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Muhammad Sanusi.
Saba Gideon, the lawmaker representing the Edu State Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly and chairman of the House Committee on Livestock, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) citing a lack of internal democracy, fairness, and inclusiveness. This defection follows a period of friction between Gideon and the state legislature, stemming from a three-month suspension imposed by the Assembly on December 18, 2025. Led by House Leader Abdulkadir Magaji and Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, the suspension accused the lawmaker of contempt and breach of legislative privilege for allegedly leaking a secret recording of a closed-door meeting. Rather than issuing a mandated written apology, Gideon challenged the suspension in court. During the insecurity panel, he criticized highway checkpoints along major routes like Lagos-Abuja and Lokoja, alleging that officers profile well-off travelers and pass their details to criminal syndicates. He asserted that security agencies know the identities behind these violent crimes, stating, “There are no unknown gunmen anywhere. The military men are the unknown gunmen, the Immigration, the Customs, they are the unknown gunmen. Nobody else.”
Following his remarks, the police dismissed the allegations as unsubstantiated and challenged him to provide proof. VDM initially responded that he would only present his evidence if charged to court, doubling down on his claims that officers aid kidnappers. He has now posted footage showing paraded police officers, though the video lacks a detailed breakdown of how it substantiates his specific tip-off claims, leaving the core allegations subject to formal investigation.
The dispute has sparked widespread reactions both online and offline. During the NBA conference, VDM defended his invitation to speak—which focused on sharing frontline experiences with insecurity rather than lecturing lawyers on the law—and pointed to incidents like the abduction of a judge and community attacks in places like Yelwata. Meanwhile, the Presidency has publicly criticized the NBA for providing a platform for what it termed reckless allegations against law enforcement.
