Governor Sule, who recently filed an appeal challenging the gubernatorial election petition tribunal’s decision favoring David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), conveyed this message during a comprehensive security meeting at the state’s Government House on Monday.
While acknowledging the maturity and tolerance demonstrated by the people of Nasarawa State and some politicians during and after the tribunal judgment, Governor Sule called for continued restraint as the Court of Appeal hearing approaches.
The meeting also addressed the recurring attacks on farmers by suspected herders in six local government areas: Nasarawa, Doma, Akwanga, Keana, Obi, and Awe.
Governor Sule expressed his willingness to collaborate with traditional rulers to bolster grassroots security, urging them to re-engage local vigilante groups, citing past successful collaborations.
“There is an observed influx of strangers causing tension, especially around Keffi Local Government Area. We also identified criminal hideouts at the riverside in Karu Local Government Area and received information about suspected drug peddlers in certain hotels. Additionally, there are reports of sleeper cells in Nasarawa, Taraba, and Kaduna created by terrorist gangs.
“We appeal to traditional rulers to reinstate engagement with local vigilante groups, as they have in the past, yielding positive results. We are revisiting collaboration with all security groups to work with our people,” he stated.
Governor Sule commended the security agencies for maintaining peace, law, and order, as well as their efforts in rescuing kidnapping victims during the meeting.
