Breaking: Health Emergency Imminent As Poor Toilet Sanitation, Water Scarcity Challenges Secondary School In Bauchi....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

An imminent epidemic is looming over Community Day Secondary School, Wunti Dada, situated on the outskirts of Bauchi State due to poor toilet sanitation and water scarcity, according to NIVO NEWS…CONTINUE READING

During a weekend visit to the government-owned school, the NIVO NEWS correspondent observed that the surrounding areas of the open four-room toilet facility were contaminated with scattered excreta, emitting a nauseating odor of urine and decomposing feces.

The Community Day Secondary School, one of the public schools in Bauchi, accommodating around 1,000 students at both the Junior and Secondary levels, is grappling with inadequate toilet sanitation, as highlighted in the UBEC/SUBEB 2015 Projects.

Several students expressed concern about the deplorable state of the toilets. One female student, who opted to remain anonymous, disclosed, “I have never used any of the school’s toilets because of their bad conditions. I used to go to my friend’s place which is just a stone’s throw from the school, while some of us go into the bush during or after school hours because we don’t want to contract diseases.”

Echoing this sentiment, another female student stated, “The toilet and the backyard are really in a mess. I have a friend who stays nearby where I go to ease myself because I am scared of toilet infection.” The students appealed to the state government to intervene and renovate the toilet facilities.

Teachers interviewed by NIVO NEWS also expressed concerns about the impact of the deplorable conditions on the students’ hygiene, well-being, and the overall learning environment. They emphasized the urgent need for improvements in both toilet facilities and student furniture.

The school principal, Bala Hassan Wunti Dada, acknowledged the inadequacy of the present toilet infrastructure, emphasizing the critical importance of good toilet facilities for the health of students and teachers.

Parents, like Usman Wunti, shared their worries about the unsanitary conditions, emphasizing the need for authorities to prioritize the improvement of school toilet facilities to ensure a safe and clean environment for learning.

Highlighting the broader issue, findings revealed that more than half of young girls who drop out of school in Nigeria do so due to poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. A WASH-in-School report by the United Nations in 2018 underscored the importance of decent WASH facilities in schools, linking them to children’s education and health.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of SUBEB, Mohammed Abdullahi, acknowledged the dilapidated state of toilets in government-owned schools and assured that the board’s action plan for the year includes the renovation of classrooms and the construction of toilets, boreholes, and fences. He also mentioned plans to provide school gardens and sporting facilities.

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
