Election observer group, Yiaga Africa, raises concerns over the non-conduct of governorship elections in some polling units in Imo and Kogi states, among the three states that held elections on Saturday, including Bayelsa…CONTINUE READING
In a statement by Dr. Hussaini Abdu, Chair of the Yiaga Africa WTV Working Group, the organization calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide clarity on the status of elections in the identified locations.
Yiaga Africa, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting participatory democracy, human rights, and civic participation, emphasizes the need for INEC to explain the situation in areas where elections did not take place, including the uploading of results from polling units where voting was not conducted.
According to reports from Yiaga Africa observers, elections were successfully concluded, and result collation is ongoing in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States. However, Yiaga Africa’s Watching The Vote (WTV) observers in Imo State noted that elections did not occur in 12% of sampled polling units, particularly in Orsu, Okigwe, Oru East, and Orlu LGAs. The organization also monitored the uploading of results on the IReV, particularly from polling units where elections did not take place.
In Orsu LGA, Imo State, Yiaga Africa reports that elections did not happen in nine (9) sampled polling units, with speculations of INEC possibly relocating all polling units to the LGA headquarters on election day. The organization expresses concern that voters in Orsu LGA were not informed of this change, and INEC did not issue an official statement on the supposed temporary relocation. Similar reports of non-conducted elections come from Okigwe LGA, Oru East LGA, Orlu LGA, Ideato North, Ikeduru, Oru West, and Owerri West LGAs in Imo State.
Yiaga Africa expresses deep concern about the uploading of results (form EC8A) for some sampled polling units where elections were not held in Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, Ideato North, Ikeduru, and Okigwe LGAs on the IReV. The organization calls on INEC to clarify the voting status across polling units in Orsu, Okigwe, Oru East, and Orlu LGAs in Imo state. Furthermore, INEC is urged to investigate potential election malpractices in these polling units, especially in locations where results were uploaded on the IReV without accreditation and voting.
Yiaga Africa, through its Watching The Vote initiative, remains committed to promoting credible elections by providing independent information on the electoral process and ensuring that announced results accurately reflect the votes cast. The organization reaffirms its dedication to this responsibility in the interest of electoral democracy in Nigeria.
Signed,
Dr. Hussaini Abdu
Chair, Yiaga Africa WTV Working Group
