The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to proceed with the collation of results for Saturday’s governorship election in Brass, dismissing pressure from Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to relocate the collation to Yenagoa, the state capital..CONTINUE READING
In a statement on Sunday, APC spokesman Felix Morka criticized what he described as Governor Diri’s efforts, stating, “Our attention has been drawn to brazen efforts by Governor Duoye Diri and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unlawfully and unduly pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move collation of results of Brass Local Government Area to Yenagoa, the State capital.”
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa Civil Society Forum, representing various civil society organizations in the state, has urged INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to intervene due to alleged irregularities and the submission of false results from certain polling units in Nembe, Brass, and Southern Ijaw local government areas.
In a statement released in Yenagoa and signed by Comrade Mike Koripamo, the group condemned attempts to compromise the integrity of the electoral process and called for an immediate and thorough investigation into reported irregularities in the affected polling units.
The group requested INEC to consider canceling results from polling units where credible evidence indicates the submission of false results to maintain the credibility and fairness of the election.
On the other hand, Morka, representing APC, emphasized that Brass is a significant stronghold for the party and accused the PDP of attempting to manipulate the results by moving the local government collation to Yenagoa.
He urged INEC to uphold the law and collate the votes of Brass LGA in Brass before moving to Yenagoa for the final state collation. Morka also condemned Governor Diri’s alleged incitement of violent protests in Yenagoa, calling it irresponsible and a violation of his oath of office.
The APC spokesman urged Governor Diri to refrain from attempting to create unrest and instead fulfill his role as the Chief Security Officer of Bayelsa State in ensuring a peaceful election process.
