Late Thursday witnessed a somber scene with tears flowing freely following the brutal killing of a female student from St Paul’s College, Eke, in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. The heartbreaking incident, believed to be orchestrated by suspected Fulani herdsmen, involved the fatal shooting of the student.

According to reliable information gathered by Nivo News, other students who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack are currently fighting for their lives in an undisclosed hospital. A distressing video received by Nivo News displayed the lifeless body of the victim and some survivors, offering a grim visual account of the tragic event.

In the video, a voice narrated, “Fulani herdsmen attacked our students; they were going home after school. One of them was shot dead, and four students were shot, with one dying instantly. See the corpse of the little student they have murdered; this one is unconscious, (pointing at another victim) we are praying that God will sustain her; she sustained four bullet wounds. This was done by the Fulanis operating at Eke-Egede Road; these are the ones that survived; the government should come to our rescue. Our place is now a death zone.”

Nivo News reached out to the Principal of the Catholic Church-owned school, Rev. Fr. Frank, who confirmed the attack. He shared the heartbreaking news, stating, “It is true; we dismissed by 3:30 pm yesterday, as the students were going home, the bus they were in was attacked by gunmen; some of them received bullet wounds, of which one later died in the hospital. That was between 4:30-5 pm; the gunmen just opened fire on them. We feel so saddened to lose such a promising young girl in this circumstance.”

Community sources informed Nivo News that the area has long been a den of kidnappers, with security agencies unable to curtail the activities of the marauding herdsmen. A community leader revealed that victims of kidnapping in Udi and Ezeagu areas are often held in the same location until ransom is paid, and those unable to meet the demand are typically killed after a few days.

The source lamented the persistence of Fulani herdsmen in the forest called ‘Ofia-akwu,’ spanning about 15 kilometers, describing it as a death zone where numerous lives have been lost in the hands of the kidnappers. Despite the long-standing criminal activities in the area, security agencies have reportedly been unable to flush them out.

In a distressing development, a well-known traditional ruler was allegedly abducted by the same gang after the attack on the school bus. The monarch from Affa was kidnapped along Eke-Egede-Affa Road following a security meeting, as reported by Offorkansi Hyginus, PRO of the Affa security committee.

Nivo News attempted to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, for a statement, but as of the time of filing this report, there was no response.
