As the governorship election in Imo State approaches this Saturday, residents are being counseled on measures to prevent electoral malpractice in their polling stations. A coalition of Imo indigenes residing abroad is encouraging the state’s residents to utilize their mobile phones to gather evidence of any attempts at rigging the election following the casting of their votes.
Chief Michael Okoroeze, the leader of the coalition, is urging residents to take to the streets and protest against any potential rigging during Saturday’s election across Imo State. In a signed statement, Okoroeze is advising voters to use the upcoming election as an opportunity to rectify some of the issues witnessed in the state over the years.
His statement reads, “Cast your vote and, afterward, use your phone to collect evidence and share it. If anyone attempts to rig the election by manipulating the ballot boxes, come out onto the streets of Imo State and protest, marching to demand that your votes be accurately counted.”
Okoroeze emphasizes the importance of protecting the vote and asserts that Imo indigenes have the right to vote for their chosen candidate without interference. He also warns against any potential interference from the Nigerian court system, urging residents to protest and make it clear that the court should stay out of the election process.
Additionally, Okoroeze advises residents to turn out in large numbers and fulfill their civic duties on Saturday. He highlights the significance of voting to put an end to extrajudicial executions, arrests of innocent citizens, rapes in Igbo land, harassments at illegal checkpoints, roadblocks, bribery, and corruption in the state. Okoroeze stresses the need for residents to address and rectify the various atrocities that have occurred in Imo State.
