Dr. Anthony Obiora Chukwuka, the Chairman of Greenlife Pharmaceuticals Limited, has urged the federal government to impose harsher penalties on individuals involved in the peddling of fake and counterfeit drugs. This call for stringent measures is part of his recommendation to deter such illicit activities, which he believes pose a significant threat to the lives of Nigerians and tarnish the country’s global reputation.
Speaking during the launch of his autobiography, titled “My Wilderness Journey,” in Lagos, Dr. Chukwuka emphasized the importance of implementing punitive actions against those engaged in nefarious activities within the pharmaceutical sector. He highlighted the adverse consequences of counterfeit drugs on both manufacturers and the nation’s image on the international stage.

Furthermore, Dr. Chukwuka stressed the significance of government interventions to support indigenous companies in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. He expressed concerns about the current challenges facing the sector, particularly the menace of fake drugs, and underscored the need for collaborative efforts to drive growth and development.
In sharing his personal journey into drug manufacturing, Dr. Chukwuka revealed that his motivation stemmed from a vision developed during the Nigerian Civil War, emphasizing the importance of having a clear vision in business. He encouraged the younger generation to pursue their goals with determination and highlighted the role of vision in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
Acknowledging the challenging operating environment in Nigeria, Dr. Chukwuka addressed the issue of pharmaceutical companies exiting the country, emphasizing that his foray into the industry was not solely driven by profit but by a commitment to contributing to healthcare, instilled in him during his childhood experiences.
As he called for continued government intervention in the health sector, Dr. Chukwuka specifically urged the authorities to strengthen laws against fake products and emphasized that severe punishment for offenders would serve as a deterrent and contribute to the fight against counterfeit drugs.
