The representative for Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Pst. Ojotu Ojema, has affirmed the commitment of the Green Chamber to put an end to recurring boat mishaps along Nigeria’s waterways. During the inaugural meeting of the House Standing Committee on National Inland Waterways at the National Assembly Complex on November 8, 2023, Ojema, who also serves as the Chairman of the committee, pledged to address the issue comprehensively through effective legislation and oversight of pertinent agencies.
Expressing concern over the numerous reports of boat mishaps leading to fatalities, Ojema assured that the committee, under his leadership, would take a holistic approach to tackle the menace. He emphasized the committee’s oversight role over the Ministry of Blue Economy and other relevant parastatals.
In a statement by his media aide, Olikita Ekani, Ojema outlined the committee’s commitment to providing necessary support to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and other marine stakeholders to enhance the navigability of the nation’s waterways.
During the meeting, Hon. Martins Esin (PDP, Akwa-Ibom) highlighted the substantial responsibility placed on the committee, particularly in light of NIWA’s dwindling revenue generation. He emphasized the need for the committee to address revenue generation in its discussions with the establishment.
Contributing to the discussion, Hon. Lanre Oladebo (PDP, Osun) urged the committee to work towards ensuring that relevant government agencies enforce the use of life jackets in water transportation.
