The Defence Headquarters has announced the implementation of a realistic gender mainstreaming strategy to address the asymmetric nature of current security challenges, with a particular focus on defending and protecting women and children during conflicts. Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, revealed this achievement during a Gender Mainstreaming Conference organized by the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Gen. Musa highlighted the success of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in surpassing the United Nations (UN) benchmark, achieving 27.9% female participation in peace support operations. The conference, themed “Building Capacity Through Gender Mainstreaming to meet Security Challenges,” aimed to enhance the military’s capacity to combat diverse security challenges by refining operational and administrative doctrines.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, commended the Federal Government’s commitment to gender mainstreaming in the armed forces, recognizing the significance of the conference in building on the Gender Policies for the Armed Forces launched in 2021. Mohammed emphasized the importance of gender inclusiveness in peace processes and the significant roles women play in fostering inclusive governance, building peace, and promoting sustainable development.

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, acknowledged the growing importance of women in policymaking within defence, insecurity, and operational frontlines. Atkinson praised Nigeria’s commitment to UNSCR 1325 and highlighted the integral role women play in promoting peace, security, and reconciliation at the grassroots level. She emphasized the need for gender considerations to be fully integrated into policies, practices, and operational environments within armed forces.

Regarding the ongoing process of uploading polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal, Omoseyindemi addressed public concerns about delays, citing network challenges in certain remote and mountainous regions of Ekiti as the primary cause. He reassured stakeholders that all remaining results will be uploaded as soon as officials move to locations with reliable network access.

As of 9:30 pm, INEC had successfully uploaded 2,128 out of the anticipated 2,445 results, accounting for approximately 83.07 per cent of the total. Voting concluded in most units by 3 pm, with subsequent sorting and counting taking place across all 16 local government areas.
