The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has received 36 Nigerian migrants, including children, who were deported from Sweden.
Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, explained that the deportees were typically contacted due to overstaying in their host country or expired visas. Ahmed, represented by Amb. Catherine Udida, Director of Migration Affairs in the Commission, stated that the Swedish authorities would have reminded the returnees of their irregular status and provided multiple opportunities for voluntary return before initiating the deportation process.

After profiling the returnees, they will be offered accommodation, dignity kits, and stipends. The government will address the real issues and provide support, including livelihood assistance, for those who voluntarily returned. Ahmed emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the well-being of the returnees, whether deported or returning voluntarily.
Mr. Roland Nwoha, Country Director of International Returns and Reintegration Assistance (IRARA), explained that the returnees faced immigration issues and were asked to leave Sweden. IRARA aims to support these Nigerians by providing arrival assistance, cash support, toiletries, and temporary accommodation before they travel to their final destinations.
The returnees, including seven families, were each given N158,000, and IRARA plans to set up income-generating activities to welcome them back in a dignified manner. Some returnees shared their experiences, highlighting issues such as being picked up from hospitals or homes while undergoing medical treatment or regularizing documents.
