A police constable, Wale Akinlotan, who was stationed at the Ilupeju police division under the Lagos State Police Command, tragically collapsed and passed away while carrying out his duties.
Akinlotan, who joined the Nigeria Police Force in 2018 and had previously worked at the Lagos Police Public Relations Office as part of their media team, was a graduate of Mass Communication from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. He was serving as the orderly to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ilupeju when the incident occurred on Monday.
The exact cause of Akinlotan’s death remains unknown. However, it was reported that he had recently suffered injuries from a suspect’s bite. Akinlotan had played a pivotal role in apprehending the suspect, who attempted to escape from police custody during the incident.
A source revealed that the suspect had bitten Akinlotan on his shoulder and fingers during the apprehension. Akinlotan had even shared videos of the injuries on Tiktok on October 19, describing them as “Job hazards” and expressing gratitude for surviving, noting that a human bite can be worse than venom from scorpions or snakes.
The police constable has since been laid to rest in a cemetery in Lagos State. Despite attempts to contact the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, he has not responded to inquiries since Tuesday.
Akinlotan’s untimely demise has raised concerns among fellow police officers, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the working conditions and welfare within the force. Several officers have pointed out that Akinlotan’s death is just one example of many similar cases of police personnel of various ranks experiencing health-related issues, which they attribute to the lack of rest and inadequate support from the police administration. Some officers lamented that they are denied proper rest, and even when they are unwell, they are required to provide medical reports before seeking treatment. They also mentioned excessive work shifts and difficulties in obtaining annual leave, which they believe contribute to the unfortunate loss of their colleagues.
