Commuters in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja, and its neighboring areas are facing a growing sense of dread due to the activities of criminal groups known as ‘one-chance robbers.’ These robbers, often armed with dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles, disguise themselves as both commercial vehicle drivers and passengers to carry out illicit activities.
Despite harrowing accounts from survivors, residents in the FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna continue to fall victim to this alarming trend on a daily basis. The attackers specialize in snatching valuables from unsuspecting passengers and have been known to resort to violence, especially when victims resist their demands.
The ‘one-chance robbers’ typically use vehicles with both foreign and local license plates, including foreign plates at the back and Nigerian plates in the front, to evade capture after their criminal acts. This criminal syndicate has also been linked to the bandits and kidnappers responsible for unrest in the FCT and its neighboring states.
In response to these incidents, the FCT Police Command reported the impoundment of approximately ten vehicles suspected to have been used for “one-chance” activities on October 13. Three suspects were apprehended, and two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and 35 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Mr. Haruna Garba, disclosed these actions were taken by the newly established ‘Anti-One Chance Squad’ within the command to combat the menace of “one-chance” activities in the FCT.
Despite these efforts by the authorities, the trend continues to persist, with many incidents going underreported. One of the victims, Miss Anthonia Anebi, shared her experience and how she fell victim to these criminals.
In response to this concerning situation, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to shut down all illegal motor parks operating in the territory and assured residents of the FCTA’s commitment to maintaining a crime-free city. Security measures to combat these non-state actors are being kept confidential by the authorities.
The activities of ‘one-chance robbers’ have raised fear among commuters, and the public continues to be concerned about the safety of traveling in the region.

Court Sentences Man to Four Years for ₦16 Million Money Laundering, Forfeits G-Wagon
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
