The United States Government has issued a warning to its citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria, advising them to steer clear of prominent hotels due to heightened security concerns. The US Embassy in Nigeria conveyed this caution in an emergency message for American citizens, issued on November 3, 2023. The embassy further highlighted that Nigerian security agencies are actively addressing the potential threats.

The advisory directs US citizens to exercise extra vigilance when considering accommodations in major hotels, to remain attentive to their surroundings, maintain a low profile, and review the travel advisory for Nigeria before making hotel arrangements.

The advisory reads as follows: “The U.S. Government has received credible information indicating an increased threat to major hotels in Nigeria’s larger cities. The Nigerian security services are diligently working to counter this threat. The U.S. Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens take this information into account when making lodging arrangements or visiting prominent hotels in Nigeria.”

The notice also includes contact details for the US embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos, providing assistance options for US citizens in need.

It is worth recalling that in October, the US issued a global advisory urging its citizens to exercise caution when traveling to various locations worldwide. Nigeria was categorized under the third tier of caution alert, suggesting reconsideration of travel plans.
