In a significant step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s energy sector, the Federal Government has unveiled its strategy to revamp the structure and reach of the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs). Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, shared this development in a communique following a three-day Ministerial Retreat held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
During his address, Akume summarized key recommendations from the retreat, introducing a series of strategic initiatives under the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” with a particular focus on reforming the nation’s power distribution network. These proposals aim to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the energy sector. Key recommendations include developing a 10-year plan to boost power generation capacity, establishing a super grid for more efficient power distribution, and reviving stalled power plant projects like the Ajaokuta Steel plant.
Furthermore, the government seeks to promote transparency and efficiency in its operations by raising the approval threshold for public procurement and ensuring thorough analysis of memos before Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings. The alignment of budget allocations with national development priorities and the expedited flow of information at FEC meetings are also prioritized.
The Renewed Hope Agenda, as outlined by the SGF, encompasses seven core areas with specific policies and priorities, including economic reform, enhanced national security, environmental sustainability, agricultural development, education, health, and social development, as well as improvements in governance and service delivery. This comprehensive approach aims to address various challenges and foster inclusive growth and development across Nigeria.
