The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has expressed profound shock in response to reports of a grim discovery in Abia State. The reports indicate that 80 bodies, including 20 headless corpses and numerous skeletons, were found.

According to The Nation, Abia State Governor Alex Otti revealed that security personnel made this gruesome discovery during a forest operation near the Lokpanta Cattle Market on the Umunneochi section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

Peter Obi reacted to this unsettling development in a series of posts on his official social media page on Thursday, November 2. He described the findings as “barbaric and cruel,” emphasizing the profound insecurity that currently plagues the environment.

Obi stated, “I read the bone-chilling story coming out of Abia State, where over 80 bodies were reportedly recovered around the cattle market, with about 20 headless decomposing bodies. This level of barbarism and extremely cruel acts only reflects how insecure our environment has been. It unearths how insecurity has continued to ravage many parts of the country, taking innocent lives and killing the economy.”

The former governor of Anambra also commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his bold response to combat insecurity in the state, noting that it is an action that other leaders should emulate.

Obi recalled a similar situation he faced in 2013 during his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State when he had to address the discovery of decomposing bodies in the Ezu River. He emphasized the paramount importance of government prioritizing the security of lives and property for meaningful development and called for more significant efforts to tackle the prevailing insecurity across the nation.
