A Nigerian Civil Society Organization has issued a plea for the release of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The organization has criticized the arrest of Emefiele by EFCC, deeming it unjustified and excessive.
The group has further given a seven-day ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu, demanding that Emefiele be released or formally charged in court. Yusuf Maje, the Convener of the Coalition of Civil Society for Defense of Human Rights, conveyed this demand during a ‘Free Emefiele Rally’ held in Abuja on Thursday.
Emefiele had been detained by the EFCC immediately after his release from the Department of State Services (DSS) on October 25. Reacting to these events, Maje asserted that Emefiele’s experiences under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration amounted to a witch hunt.

He emphasized, “We believe that subjecting Godwin Emefiele to further arrest constitutes double jeopardy. It is an instance of excessive action by the EFCC and a misallocation of government resources to subject an innocent citizen to such a harrowing experience merely to impart a lesson. Concerned members of the public are worried that the EFCC has allowed itself to become a tool of oppression rather than the anti-corruption agency it should be.”
Maje continued, “We firmly declare that the practice of transferring Godwin Emefiele like a pawn between various government agencies in the name of investigation is unacceptable and will be vigorously opposed. We reject this arbitrary approach because Nigeria has moved beyond the era of military rule where the rights of innocent citizens can be summarily suspended. While we acknowledge President Tinubu’s efforts to combat corruption and steer the country towards economic growth and sustainable development through his Renewed Hope Agenda, we assert that due process must be followed.”
In conclusion, the group’s demand is clear: “We hereby insist that Godwin Emefiele should either be released from EFCC custody or formally charged in court within the next seven days. Should this demand not be met, the Federal Government should prepare for widespread opposition from our Coalition across the nation.”
