The House of Representatives has excluded the contentious N5 billion allocation for a presidential yacht from the 2023 supplementary budget. The budget received approval from the House on Tuesday after adopting the report presented by Abubakar Bichi, the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, representing Kano State.
The Committee of Supply reviewed the recommendations of the Appropriations Committee and passed the bill. After the budget’s passage, Bichi addressed journalists and confirmed the removal of the controversial presidential yacht. He mentioned that the N5 billion originally designated for the yacht had been reallocated to Student Loans, increasing the allocation for student loans to 10 billion, up from the initial 5.5 billion.
The Committee also augmented the budget allocation for the Ministry of Defence from 476 billion to 546 billion due to heightened security concerns. Bichi also revealed that the minimum wage for workers was considered and approved for onward transmission to the executive, with an assurance of thorough legislative oversight to guarantee 100 percent implementation.

Additionally, the allocation of 100 billion for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as requested by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was retained in the budget. Consequently, the House passed a supplementary budget of 2.177 trillion.
It is worth noting that President Bola Tinubu’s initial proposal included expenditures such as 1.5 billion for First Lady’s office vehicles, 5 billion for a presidential yacht, and 12.5 billion for the presidential air fleet. Social media campaigns aimed at preventing the National Assembly from endorsing the supplementary budget are ongoing, but the bill received swift approval.
Following the bill’s passage, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced that the President would sign it on Friday.
