Nigerian Police Respond To Claims Of NLC President’s Arrest, Affirm Protective Custody....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Imo State Police Command has refuted allegations of arresting Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). Okoye Henry, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, issued a statement clarifying that Joe Ajaero was not arrested but was placed in protective custody.

The statement from the Imo command explained the circumstances: “The Imo State Police Command wishes to clarify certain vague reports that suggested the arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, in Owerri. It is important to emphasize that the NLC President was in Owerri as part of the Congress’s preparations to mobilize workers for a major protest rally in the state.”

According to Okoye, during the planning process, there were discussions about potentially locking down essential facilities, including the airport, which led to confrontations and heated arguments involving some workers and other individuals. Eventually, a mob attacked the NLC President.

Upon receiving this information, the Imo Police Command promptly dispatched police officers to the scene. The officer in charge used his discretion to place the NLC President in protective custody at the State Command Headquarters to ensure his safety and prevent any harm during the ensuing altercation. The Commissioner of Police then directed that Joe Ajaero be taken to the Police Medical Services in Owerri for medical attention due to the attack. He has been provided with sufficient security to continue his lawful activities for the day.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
