The Imo State Government has officially disclaimed any involvement in the arrest of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who was subjected to a brutal attack during a protest in Owerri.

In a joint statement issued by NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, and TUC Secretary, Nuhu Toro, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, along with the state’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Barde, were accused of conspiring to apprehend Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the state’s capital.

Nevertheless, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, contradicted these allegations in a statement delivered on Wednesday, stating that those leveling accusations against the government were habitual troublemakers who cry wolf when there’s none.

Emelumba reminded that the purported strike action in the state had been halted by the National Industrial Court in Owerri, rendering the planned action illegal.

He emphasized that the Imo State chapter of the NLC had declared its withdrawal from the strike in compliance with the court’s directive.

The commissioner emphasized that the state government bore no responsibility for the arrest since it upholds the principles of the rule of law. He questioned the reasons for Joe Ajaero’s presence in Owerri in violation of the court’s order, which had warned of severe consequences for disobedience.

Furthermore, the commissioner added that the government’s information suggested there might have been a clash between legitimate workers of Imo State and unruly individuals from Abuja, prompting police intervention to maintain peace.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

He noted that destructive practices by some youths and community members often contribute to the early failure of road projects across the country.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.
