Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has called for a stronger partnership with the Nigerian Army to address the issue of criminal elements in the state.
During a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoheed Lagbaja, at Army Headquarters in Abuja, Governor Alia expressed his concerns. He highlighted that Benue, once known for its peace, is currently facing security challenges, including threats from armed herders, bandits, and local gangsters.
The governor pointed out that the state experiences frequent incidents of violence, with many unreported cases, and emphasized the need for additional manpower and proper equipment for security formations within Benue, such as Operation Whirlstroke and the 401 Special Forces Brigade. He suggested that with adequate resources, these formations could extend their operations into the hinterlands, going beyond their current presence on the roads.
Furthermore, Governor Alia called for the establishment of Force Operation Bases in various locations within the state to improve security, including Anyiin, Naka, Ukum, Agatu, Udei, and Gbajimba.
In response, the Chief of Army Staff assured the governor of the army’s commitment to addressing the security situation in Benue. He recognized the state’s unique security challenges and pledged to intensify efforts, especially as the dry season approaches, historically a period of increased unrest in the region.
