The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has taken decisive action by shutting down 34 companies for their failure to remit Personal Income Taxes (PIT) owed by their employees. Among the affected businesses are NTS Nigeria Ltd., Med-In Hospital & Pharma Services Ltd., Danvic Petroleum Int’l Ltd., and several others. Concurrently, 23 hotels, restaurants, and event centers have been closed for neglecting to deduct and remit Consumption Taxes. These establishments include Blitz Suites & Hotel, Offshoroomz Hotel, and Jade Palace Chinese Restaurant, among others.
During a recent tax enforcement operation, Seyi Alade, Director of Legal Services at LIRS, disclosed that the accumulated tax liabilities amounted to approximately N356.12 million, lamenting the revenue loss suffered by the government due to these actions. He reiterated that the renewed enforcement measures are aimed at encouraging compliance with the remittance of Consumption and Personal Income taxes to fund government projects for the public’s benefit.
Alade emphasized that these firms had been withholding and misappropriating funds intended for Personal Income taxes and consumption taxes, a practice he deemed unpatriotic and illegal. He also warned that failing to file tax returns or evading taxes constitutes criminal offenses, which may lead to financial penalties and, in some cases, custodial sentences upon conviction.
