In a bid to promote early cancer detection, the MedicAid Cancer Foundation (MCF) advises Nigerians to prioritize routine cancer screenings. Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, CEO of the organization and former First Lady of Kebbi State, shared this imperative advice during the foundation’s annual awareness walk and fundraising campaign against cancer, known as #WalkAwayCancer, held in Abuja.
Dr. Bagudu stressed the significance of early detection in reducing cancer-related mortality and morbidity. She expressed concern over the prevalent issue of delayed cancer diagnosis and treatment in the country.
Additionally, she emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity provided by the federal government’s recent introduction of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for girls aged 9 to 14. The vaccine is a crucial tool in protecting against cervical cancer, according to Dr. Bagudu, who assured its safety and high effectiveness. She urged Nigerians to dismiss unfounded rumors that the HPV vaccine could lead to infertility.
Dr. Bagudu pointed out that the MedicAid Cancer Foundation’s annual awareness walk against cancer, now in its 14th year, aims to raise awareness about the disease. She highlighted the event’s consistent success in drawing participation from cancer advocates, survivors, policymakers, non-state actors, and the Nigerian public at large.
